Chennai: A 23-year-old student of IIT,&nbsp;Madras allegedly committed suicide at his hostel room, police&nbsp;said today.&nbsp;
Nagendra Kumar Reddy was found hanging in his room at the&nbsp;premier technical institute here last night.
The reason for the M.Tech. student taking the extreme&nbsp;step was not clear since he had not left behind any suicide&nbsp;note but police were probing his death, they added.&nbsp;
But according to reports,&nbsp;Nagendra was depressed after failing to clear the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) to study abroad.
He had recently returned to the hostel after visiting&nbsp;his home in Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh for Vinayaka&nbsp;Chaturthi celebrations, they said.&nbsp;
Expressing condolences over the death, the institute said&nbsp;in a release: "IIT Madras is deeply saddened to report the&nbsp;death of (a) student on its campus on September 21. The&nbsp;student has been identified as a MTech scholar from Andhra&nbsp;Pradesh."
IIT, Madras was cooperating with the police in its&nbsp;investigation, Director of the Institute, M Bhaskar Ramamurthy&nbsp;said in the release, adding, "We have no indication of the&nbsp;reason for (the) death."
"The student's parents have been notified. The Institute&nbsp;offers its deepest condolences to the parents for the&nbsp;unfortunate and devastating loss," he said.
