The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, has issued a weather alert forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh between August 4 and August 6, 2025, reported the ANI.

In the past 24 hours, several regions in Haryana witnessed light to moderate showers, while parts of Punjab recorded rainfall at isolated locations. Additionally, heavy rainfall was reported from a few pockets in Haryana.

According to the IMD, rainfall activity is set to pick up intensity over the next few days. On August 4, light to moderate rain is expected at scattered places, with a sharp increase in rainfall across northern and eastern Punjab, as well as northern, eastern, and southern Haryana and Chandigarh from August 5 onward, reported ANI.

Widespread light to moderate rainfall is likely on August 5 across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, continuing into August 6 in Haryana and Chandigarh. Heavy rain (7 cm or more) may occur at isolated locations in northern and eastern Punjab between August 4 and 5. Similarly, heavy showers are expected in northern, eastern, and southern Haryana, including Chandigarh, from August 4 to 6.

"Of particular concern is the forecast for very heavy rainfall (12 cm or more) on August 5 at isolated places in Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, Jhajjar, Gurugram, Faridabad, Mewat, and Palwal districts and adjoining areas."

As reported by ANI, IMD has warned that the intense rainfall may lead to multiple disruptions including waterlogging in low-lying regions, damage to both standing and harvested crops left in the open, interruptions to electricity and water supply, and heavy traffic snarls due to slippery roads and low visibility.

Rising water levels in seasonal rivers and drains could also pose risks, especially to weaker structures.

Farmers have been advised to refrain from irrigating fields or spraying chemicals during this spell. They are urged to ensure proper drainage systems in agricultural land and store harvested produce in secure, covered spaces. Residents are similarly advised to avoid flood-prone areas, stay away from water bodies, and avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.

For public safety, the department has also recommended safe driving practices and advised people to remain indoors during periods of intense weather activity. A detailed district-wise forecast has been issued, and both citizens and local authorities have been asked to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions.
