Paper paintings are the flavour of the capital this season

Who says paper paintings don't last long? Paper is back with a bang in the capital, replacing the canvas. Art Konsult has organised an exhibition of paper paintings of artists ranging from legends like Rabindranath Tagore, Ram Kinker Baij and Somnath Hore to contemporaries such as Mithu Sen, Vibha Galhotra and Puneet Kaushik.

There are paintings ranging from the 1900s to the present day. The exhibition aims to revive paper art which has been languishing in recent times. Paper scores over canvas as its feel, texture and colour is different than drawings on canvas. "Paper is known to be a medium on which some of the best experiments and drawings have been done. Recently, Tagore's paper paintings sold at a whopping Rs 2.5 crores (one of the most expensive painting per sq inch) but unfortunately paper is most the underrated among all art mediums in our country. The show showcases the history and the future of paper paintings," says Rahul Bhattacharya, Managing Editor, Art and Deal Magazine.

The show blurs the line between folk, high and popular art and gives an insight into different mediums of art. The span of works, ranging from colonial lithography to post-Independence paper trends, also helps in expanding one's horizon.
The prices of these works of art start at an affordable Rs 2,500 and go up to Rs 5 lakhs.
