The accident occurred at 6:13 AM in the Battal Ballian area when a speeding truck broke through a barricade and struck the car, which was ferrying eight pilgrims enroute to the Amarnath Yatra via the Pahalgam base camp, according to a security force officer, reported PTI.
The car was part of the 16th batch of over 7,900 pilgrims who had departed from Jammu for the twin base camps of Pahalgam and Baltal earlier in the day.
Of the eight pilgrims, five were injured, the officer said, adding that the CRPF shifted them to a hospital where their condition is reported to be stable. The remaining three sustained minor injuries and received first aid at the site, reported PTI.
Police have registered a case in connection with the accident, and further investigation is underway. The truck involved has been seized.
Four dead in three separate accidents on Delhi-Haridwar national highway
Meanwhile, in another tragic incident, four people, including three Kanwariyas were killed and three others injured in three separate accidents on the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway on Thursday.
In the first accident, two Kanwariyas, Raj (18) and Vipin (20), died while three others, including a woman, were injured after their motorcycle collided with a scooter near the Budhana underpass in the Khatauli police station area, reported PTI.
Khatauli Station House Officer Brijesh Kumar said, “The deceased were on their way from Ghaziabad to Haridwar to collect Ganga water when the accident occurred.” He added that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and the injured have been admitted to the hospital, with some reported to be in serious condition, reported PTI.
In the second incident, another pilgrim, Rohit (23), a resident of Delhi's Rohini, was killed after being run over by a truck near Purkazi town. Purkazi SHO Jaivir Singh said the body has been sent for post-mortem, reported PTI.
In the third incident, Mahesh Kumar (38), a resident of Madhya Pradesh, was killed early in the morning near Saleempur village, under the Purkazi police station limits, reported PTI.
According to SHO Jaivir Singh, Kumar was sleeping under a parked tractor-trolley belonging to Kanwariyas when he was accidentally run over. Police confirmed that Mahesh Kumar was not a Kanwariya.
