WHAT's ON dropped by a new handicraft store, and spotted some rare gems from Thailand and Indonesia

At first glance, you may not spot Meera Handicrafts, but once you step in, you will have a hard time leaving.

Ambience: As you step in, the first thing you notice is the serenity. The store comprises of two rooms and is done up in white with large windows that let in natural light. The soft chanting of mantras cast a soothing spell and the glass shelves are filled with various artifacts. If you look up, you will spot colourful lanterns from Gujarat. There are showpieces strewn all over and a low-lying bench is stacked with colourful hand-embroidered jholas.

Range: There are handicrafts from Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu as well as far-flung countries like Thailand and Indonesia. Their handmade aroma candles, herbal soaps, ethnic bags, hand-embroidered wall hangings and cushion covers are very popular. The owner personally makes trips twice a year to get the items and everything is hand-picked. If you search, you might also come across inlaid ceramic artifacts from Agra. They also sell handmade paper products, such as diaries and books.

We liked: The Buddha's Aura (Rs 12, 000) from Thailand represents the aura around Lord Buddha and has an interesting stone effect. A beautifully-carved wooden figurine of goddess Saraswati (Rs 25,000) from Tamil Nadu has some exotic artistry and intricate carvings. A set of Poi (Rs 799), made with fluorescent coloured cloth was also eye-catching. It is used for Poi dancing (which is a form of juggling) in the Osho commune. A stone Lotus Fountain (Rs 12,000), which can be arranged with pebbles in a corner, is ideal for adding a touch of tranquility to your home space.
