Speaking to ANI, Kadu warned that the protest would escalate if the government failed to respond promptly.
“Now we will stop trains after 12 noon. Our farmers are drowning in debt. If the state government doesn’t have the money, the central government should help,” Kadu said.
The Prahar Party leader also accused the government of neglecting farmers’ demands for crop compensation and price assurance.
“Farmers demanded Rs 6,000 for soybean and a 20 per cent bonus for every crop. Madhya Pradesh has implemented the Bhavantar Yojana, but in Maharashtra, not a single crop is getting its full price. The Chief Minister doesn’t even have time to meet the farmers,” Kadu added.
He claimed that between 1 lakh and 1.5 lakh farmers had already joined the protest and predicted that another one lakh would arrive by Thursday if their demands remained unmet.
Earlier this month, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a Rs 31,628 crore relief package for farmers affected by floods and unseasonal rains across 29 districts of Maharashtra. The package includes a Rs 10,000 cash relief to farmers whose crops were damaged across 68 lakh hectares of farmland.
However, protesters have called the package inadequate and are demanding a complete waiver of farm loans to prevent further rural distress.
Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah said that the trio of Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar in the Maharashtra government has also taken several initiatives to help farmers. He stated that the Maharashtra government announced a relief package of Rs 2,215 crore, benefiting over 31 lakh farmers.
He added that the state government also initiated a scheme to provide Rs 10,000 in cash and 35 kg of food grains to affected farmers. Moreover, recovery of short-term agricultural loans was suspended, and exemptions were granted in land revenue and school examinations.
