Fraudsters using fake loan apps to blackmail users with morphed images, warns Maharashtra Cyber

Maharashtra Cyber Police have issued a warning about a rising online crimes targeting young people, women, and vulnerable users, in which fraudsters use fake loan apps to blackmail victims with morphed images.

According to officers, cybercriminals are sending fraudulent links disguised as job offers, cashback deals, or loan approvals. When users click these links, a malicious loan app is installed on their phones, resulting in unauthorised transfers of Rs 5,000 or more from the bank accounts of users.


“The harassment begins once the money is transferred,” said Sanjay Shintre, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Maharashtra Cyber.



“Victims are threatened to repay the amount, and in many cases, blackmailed with vulgar photographs created from images in the victim’s phone gallery,” he added.

Precautions for users

Authorities have appealed to users to take these safety measures to avoid falling prey to this scam:

Do not click on unknown or suspicious links.

Install apps only from official platforms such as Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Deny unnecessary permissions to apps, such as access to the gallery, contacts, or microphone.

Use trusted antivirus software and keep devices updated.

Avoid sharing personal photos or sensitive information online.

Where to report frauds

Victims or anyone who encounters such scams can report them to the authorities:

Call 1930 for financial cyber fraud.

Report malicious links on the CHAKSHU portal via Sanchar Saathi: https://www.sancharsaathi.gov.in (Click on ‘Report Suspected Fraud Communication’)

File a complaint at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: https://www.cybercrime.gov.in

Preserve evidence such as screenshots, call recordings, and transaction details for investigation
