Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Harshwardhan Sapkal on Monday accused the Mahayuti government of deceiving farmers affected by excessive rainfall and floods, calling the recently approved Rs 11,000-crore relief package as “deceptive” as the earlier Rs 32,000-crore package.

Sapkal reiterated that the government should provide Rs 50,000 per hectare to affected farmers, instead of “adding salt to their wounds” with inadequate relief measures.

Speaking to the media in Nanded, the Congress state president launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led ruling Mahayuti alliance.

Responding to a recent remark made by Devendra Fadnavis about Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Sapkal said the Chief Minister got the top executive post by “stealing votes”.

Devendra Fadnavis is a ‘Chor Mukhya Mantri (stolen mandate Chief Minister), a cheap Chief Minister, and that’s why he makes such cheap remarks. Such low-level criticism cannot diminish Rahul Gandhi’s leadership or capabilities,” Sapkal said.

He also asserted that Nanded has always been a district rooted in Congress ideology.

“The Congress is a party of workers, not just leaders. Nanded has always stood by Congress ideology and will continue to do so,” said the party’s state chief.

Sapkal added that the growing number of leaders and workers from other parties joining Congress is a result of Gandhi’s persistent struggle and vision.

“Yesterday in Gadchiroli, today in Nanded, and tomorrow in Jalna — people are joining the Congress because they believe in its ideology. This strengthens the party and will help us regain our past glory in Maharashtra,” Sapkal said.

Reacting to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent comment urging BJP workers to ensure a “clean sweep” in upcoming local body elections, Sapkal said: “In the forthcoming local body polls, their own words will come back to bite them,” he said.

Meanwhile, several leaders and office-bearers from the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) joined the Congress in Nanded in Sapkal’s presence. Among those who joined were Ramdas Sumathankar, state working president of NCP’s Divyang Cell.

The new entrants include four former municipal chairpersons, 23 former corporators, eight current corporators, two former Zilla Parishad members, and several former panchayat samiti chairpersons and members.
