The clash involved supporters of local NCP MLA Vijaysinh Pandit and BJP leader and former MLA Laxman Pawar at a booth in ward number 10. Although BJP and Ajit Pawar-led NCP are allies at the state level, they are contesting against each other in Gevrai, according to the PTI.
Following the argument, party workers from both sides marched to Pawar’s house, resulting in stone-pelting and damage to parked vehicles.
Polling later resumed after police intervention.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, reports of clashes between Shiv Sena and NCP workers in Raigad district, particularly in Mahad and Roha, where local leaders from both parties, including state NCP chief Sunil Tatkare and Shiv Sena minister Bharat Gogawale, are rivals also emerged.
Clashes between political workers also took place at Muktai Nagar in Jalgaon, Bhor in Pune, Mhaswad in Satara, Jat in Sangli, Hingoli, Buldhana, Dahanu in Thane and Shahada in Nandurbar district, a police official said.
Following the incidents, NCP chief and Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar condemned incidents of violence during elections on Tuesday, saying that such behaviour has no place in a democracy.
In a post on X, Ajit Pawar described elections as a “sacred process” and stressed that every voter must be able to cast their vote without fear. He urged all parties, including members of the ruling coalition, to maintain discipline and honour the principle of “alliance dharma.”
“Any attempt to disturb peace or influence voters through force is against the Constitution and Maharashtra’s values. Such behaviour will not be tolerated,” Pawar added.
On Tuesday, polling was held across 264 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Maharashtra, with contests taking place even among partners of the ruling alliance, including BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP.
