Election authorities have seized Rs 6 lakh in cash from an SUV in Majalgaon in Beed district of Maharashtra, on the final day of campaigning for the local body elections, officials said on Tuesday, reported the PTI.
According to officials, a complaint was received on Monday evening alleging that cash was being distributed from an SUV parked along a bypass road.
“The cash recovered from the jeep has been seized. The individual concerned has been instructed to provide proper accounting documents,” said Sundar Bondar, Chief Officer of the Majalgaon Municipal Council, the news agency reported.
Meanwhile, voting was underway on Tuesday across 264 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Maharashtra in the first phase of the local body elections, where 6,042 seats and 264 council president posts are being contested.
Polling began at 7.30 am and will conclude at 5.30 pm, officials said.
Nearly one crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the first round of the multi-tier rural and urban local bodies elections, which the Supreme Court has directed must be completed by January 31, 2026.
According to officials, 12,316 polling stations have been set up across the state, and 62,108 polling personnel have been deployed. Security arrangements have also been strengthened to ensure peaceful voting, as per the PTI.
The State Election Commission (SEC) has arranged an adequate number of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), including 17,367 control units and 34,734 ballot units.
The election process for 288 local bodies, announced on November 4. The SEC has postponed polling in 24 local bodies to 20 December owing to judicial appeals filed in response to decisions made by Returning Officers during nomination scrutiny.
Additionally, due to ongoing court cases, elections for 154 seats across 76 municipal councils and nagar panchayats have been rescheduled to December 20.
These polls are being widely viewed as a key indicator of Maharashtra’s political mood.
The Election Commission has introduced a verification mechanism to flag suspected duplicate voters with double stars on the rolls, requiring strict identity checks at polling stations. It has also launched a mobile application providing information on candidates and voters, including candidate affidavits.
