A Shiv Sena leader's house in Dhule district was allegedly attacked and a BJP candidate in Nagpur was assaulted, prompting police to launch a probe into the matter, officials said.
Dhule district on Thursday witnessed serious poll-related violence over the past 48 hours, police said, including a clash between two groups that resulted in a damaged EVM during the Maharashtra local body elections, reported the PTI.
The home of Manoj More, Shiv Sena’s Dhule district chief, in Krushi Colony, Deopur, was vandalised by a mob of about 20 people on Wednesday evening, as per the PTI.
Stones were thrown and vehicles damaged, the police official added.
The attack was reportedly linked to a dispute over the withdrawal of candidature between More and BJP’s Vilas Shinde, said an official.
Cases registered
Cases have been registered against supporters of both More and Shinde under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rioting and unlawful assembly, the official said.
Earlier on Thursday morning, two groups clashed at a school in ward number 18, and some individuals entered the polling booth, damaging an EVM. Polling was stalled for over an hour before resuming with a replacement machine. Authorities have deployed additional police personnel to maintain law and order, according to the PTI.
Polling for 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra was held on Thursday. The vote counting is scheduled for Friday.
Clashes between rival party workers in parts of state
Meanwhile, a dispute over alleged cash distribution between BJP and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) supporters occurred in Ichalkaranji in Kolhapur district.
In Akola, candidates of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed verbally and physically, while All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Congress workers fought in Solapur. Clashes between Shiv Sena and Shiv Sena (UBT) candidates were reported in Bhandup, and scuffles in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar left some people seriously injured, the official added.
A case was registered against the husband of a BJP candidate after a photograph showing him with an EVM while voting went viral on social media.
