A 53-year-old man, who had been on the run for around 19 years in a fraud case, was arrested in the Latur district of Maharashtra, police said on Tuesday.
According to the PTI, the accused, who has been identified as Abhang Prabhu, alias Prabhakar Suryawanshi, is accused of cheating people by posing as the sarpanch of a village and preparing fake birth certificates for children.
However, a case was registered against him on June 14, 2006, at Gandhi Chowk police station under various sections of the erstwhile Indian Penal Code (IPC) for cheating and other charges, a police official said.
Police officials further asserted that “Suryawanshi changed his locations frequently, making it difficult for investigators to trace him. He travelled from village to village, falsely identifying himself as the sarpanch of a gram panchayat, as per PTI.
"He allegedly prepared fake birth certificates and cheated several citizens. He collected blank birth certificate forms of children, forged signatures and stamps, and issued fake documents," they added.
PTI reported that recently, a special team received confidential information that the accused was staying in the Bobli (Bk) area in Latur district, following which a raid was conducted on Sunday.
Mumbai Police arrest serial burglar behind over 100 shop theft cases
In a different scenario, the Kandivali Police earlier on November 13 arrested a man accused of carrying out over 100 burglaries across Mumbai. The accused was identified as 38-year-old Azan Khan, alias Abhayraj Motilal Saroj, alias Monu.
According to police sources, Monu is known for his peculiar pattern of theft—he exclusively targeted medical stores, hardware shops, sweet shops, and grocery stores, stealing only cash and avoiding valuables such as jewellery or mobile phones.
Whatever cash he managed to steal, Monu immediately spent it on drugs and then indulged in a lavish spree. Afterwards, he reportedly slept for one or two days. Once the effect of the drugs wore off, he would venture out again to commit another theft.
An officer, while briefing about the case, said, “So far, Monu has allegedly committed over 100 thefts across Mumbai. With his arrest, the Kandivali Police have solved 10 housebreaking cases, including six registered at Kandivali Police Station and others in Malad and Bangur Nagar.”
