The Maharashtra government informed the Supreme Court on Monday that the remaining land for the construction of the new Bombay High Court complex in Bandra will be handed over by March 2026.

According to the news agency PTI, a bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran took note of the submission during the hearing of a suo motu case titled “Heritage Building of the Bombay High Court and allotment of additional lands for the High Court”. While the bench initially considered closing the matter, it decided to keep it pending for further review in April 2026, following submissions from lawyers.

The state government had earlier stated that of the total 17.45 acres allotted for the new complex, 15.33 acres were already in possession. Negotiations are currently underway to relocate existing structures on the remaining portion. The government also said that the appointment of an architect, project finalisation, and budget approval are in progress.

As per the PTI, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new complex took place on September 23 last year. The project, spread across 30.16 acres, is expected to feature modern courtrooms, judges’ chambers, an arbitration and mediation centre, an auditorium, a library, and upgraded facilities for staff, lawyers, and litigants.

The Bombay High Court, established in 1862, currently operates from its historic building near Flora Fountain, which has been in use since 1878. The new Bandra complex aims to address space constraints and safety concerns. The high court has jurisdiction over Maharashtra and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman, and Diu, with a sanctioned strength of 94 judges.

The Supreme Court took up the matter following an April 2024 letter petition from Bombay Bar Association president Nitin Thakker and other bar leaders, highlighting the urgent need for a new building to accommodate the court’s growing requirements.

Amit Shah lays foundation stone Maharashtra BJP HQ in Mumbai, vows to wipe out Opposition

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said the BJP doesn't need crutches and runs on its own strength in Maharashtra, and asked the party cadre to ensure that the Opposition is wiped out in the ensuing local body polls, reported news agency PTI.

"We have proven that the politics of family-run parties will no longer work in this country. It is the politics of performance that will lead the nation forward," Shah said, addressing party workers after laying the foundation stone of Maharashtra BJP's new office building near Churchgate station in south Mumbai.

"Modi ji is the best example of this. A child born in a humble tea seller's home rose, through his dedication, sacrifice, and hard work, to become the prime minister of India."
