Ministers, legislators, and MPs from the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will donate one month’s salary to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to support flood relief in the rain-affected regions of Maharashtra, the party announced on Wednesday.
The decision comes in the wake of widespread devastation caused by heavy rains, particularly in the Marathwada region and parts of western Maharashtra, including Solapur district, where crops, livestock, homes, and businesses have suffered extensive damage.
According to the news agency PTI, Sunil Tatkare, state president of the NCP, said, “NCP’s ministers, MLAs, and MPs will donate their one month’s salary as assistance to the CM Relief Fund.”
Earlier in the day, Pawar visited the flood-hit Karmala taluka in Solapur, where he interacted with farmers and local officials. He assured farmers that the government would stand by them and urged them "not to lose heart."
According to PTI, Tatkare further stated, “Ajit Pawar is touring the rain-hit regions and overseeing relief work. The NCP stands firmly with farmers, labourers, and the common people.”
Meanwhile, Congress leader Satej Patil has appealed to citizens to donate food grains, medicines, drinking water, and educational materials to help flood victims in Marathwada.
Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde promises aid to farmers affected by rains
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister (CM) Eknath said on Wednesday that the government would provide all possible assistance to rain-hit farmers in the state.
He was speaking to reporters after visiting flood-affected pockets in the Dharashiv district in the Marathwada region along with Shiv Sena leader Tanaji Sawant, according to the news agency PTI. During the tour, Shinde interacted with farmers and flood-affected people.
Unprecedented rains in the arid Marathwada, which comprises eight districts, over the past four days had claimed at least eight lives, marooned villages, damaged houses and flattened crops on more than 30,000 hectares, officials had said on Tuesday. Dharashiv is a part of the region.
As per PTI, Shinde said the government would help the farmers who have suffered losses due to the floods and recent torrential downpours.
The deputy CM said personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescued people from flooded areas and airlifted several persons to safer places.
Parties should not indulge in politics and instead, come out to help all those affected, he said.
The Marathwada region had recorded 823.8 mm (28.5 per cent more) rainfall till Tuesday morning, against the average expected downpour of 640.8 mm for the period, according to officials.
