Stock markets decline in early trade on selling in IT shares, sluggish Asian peers


Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty declined in early trade on Friday, dragged by IT shares and sluggish trends in Asian markets. The 30-share BSE Sensex declined by 219 points to 81,414.02 in early trade. The NSE Nifty dipped 53.6 points to 24,780. Investors turned cautious ahead of the release of domestic GDP data, analysts said.



Mumbai: Marol locals challenge BMC’s nullah clean-up claims; officials finally clear Krishna Nagar drain

Concerned about the state of the Krishna Nagar nullah, which flows from SEEPZ to the Mithi river, the NGO Watchdog Foundation emailed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on May 28, two days after heavy showers lashed Mumbai, and attached pictures of the clogged drain. While locals prevailed over the civic body, which cleaned the nullah yesterday, officials pointed out that citizens should refrain from throwing trash in nullahs, which leads to waterlogging. Sunjoy Monga, renowned birdman and conservationist, passes away at 63

Sunjoy Monga, 63, renowned birdman, conservation activist, prolific writer and former mid-day columnist, passed away on May 28 after a long battle with blood cancer. Among the numerous hats Monga wore, one of his favourites was that of a wildlife photographer. Read more.
