Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor
India’s first Bullet Train project covers a total distance of 508 kilometres between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Out of this, 352 km falls in Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, while 156 km lies in Maharashtra.
The corridor will connect major cities including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, Thane and Mumbai.
Travel time to reduce to two hours
According to the government, the Bullet Train will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to around two hours. This is expected to significantly improve inter-city travel and economic activity.
Construction progress so far
As per the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL), more than 85 per cent of the corridor, or around 465 km, is being built on elevated viaducts. Of this, 326 km has already been completed.
PM Modi reviews project
In November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project during his visit to Gujarat.
He inspected the Surat Bullet Train station, which is inspired by the city’s famous diamond industry.
Features of Bullet Train station in Surat
The Surat station stands 26.3 metres tall and has a built-up area of 58,352 square metres. It has three levels:
Ground floor for parking and security checks
Concourse level with lounges, restrooms, kiosks and ticket counters
Platform level for boarding passengers
While the main structure is complete, interior work and passenger facilities are still being developed.
Track and Bridge Work Near Completion
Track work, including RC track-bed construction and temporary track installation, has been completed at the Surat site.
Work on river bridges is also progressing well, with 17 out of 25 bridges already built.
The 47-km Surat–Bilimora stretch is one of the most advanced sections, where civil works and track-bed preparation have been fully completed.
Vande Bharat sleeper trains coming soon
The minister also announced that a new overnight journey experience will begin with the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains.
“These sleeper trains will offer the same comfort, safety and standards as the chair car version,” he said.
Vaishnaw said the Vande Bharat Express chair car has created a new sense of confidence among passengers across the country.
He added that people have appreciated the trains greatly, and requests are now coming from all parts of India to introduce more Vande Bharat services. According to him, almost every Member of Parliament wants a Vande Bharat train for their region.
