Officials plan to close two roads adjacent to main civic building to accommodate vehicles of new members voted to the BBMP

The first day at the BBMP council will not be smooth sailing. Parking woes at the corporation are set to dog the newly-elected members.

To deal with the space constraints, officials plan to close two roads adjacent to the building. Officials, who until recently boasted of a new council building that would accommodate the increased number of councillors.

"Shortage of parking space is among the first issues that we plan to look into," said Mahadev N, who has been facilitating parking on the corporation building premises for the last 10 years.

The problem has surfaced as the number of councillors has also increased. The former council had 100 councillors and over 30 officials, whereas the corporation will have 198 councillors and over 50 officials.

Commuters beware

Neither will the going be any easier for those driving on roads adjacent to the corporation building at NR Square.

BBMP officials plan to close one of the two roads that connects commuters to Shantinagar and Lalbagh, including P Kalinga Road.

"Though we have made necessary changes, parking remains a cause for concern.

We will shortly hold a meeting with traffic officials andu00a0 plan to close one of two roads adjacent to the corporation building," explained Dr S Khandre, PRO, BBMP.

BBMP, A History

The Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BMP) rechristened Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike in 2007 following the merger of seven City Municipal Councils and a Town Municipal Council and 111 villages.

While the last term of the city council ended in November 2006, polls for thenewly-established BBMP were delayed for several reasons.

However, polls were conducted on March 28, 2010 following judicial intervention.

The new council for Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike will be in place following the counting of votes scheduled for April 5.
