The flood situation in the northeast remained critical with the toll due to floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain over the past few days rose to 36 on Tuesday, while nearly six lakh remained affected across several states in the region.
Arunachal Pradesh
The toll in floods and landslides triggered by relentless rain in the state has increased to 11 after a labourer died in a wall collapse incident in Anjaw district on Tuesday. A total of 938 people have been affected by floods in 156 villages in 23 districts, officials said.
Flood-like conditions and landslides have been reported in multiple districts, including West Kameng, Kamle, Lower and Upper Subansiri, Papum Pare, Dibang Valley, Lower Dibang Valley, Lohit, Changlang, Kra Daadi, Kurung Kumey, and Longding, as rivers and tributaries continued to flow above danger levels, they said. So far, 18 people have been evacuated from flood-hit areas.
Mizoram
Five deaths were reported in the current wave of landslides, house collapse triggered by heavy rainall in last 10 days. The state also reported 552 landslides at several places, while 152 houses have collapsed. Of the total 11 districts, east Mizoram’s Champhai, which shares a border with Myanmar, reported three deaths, 209 landslides, nine house damages and evacuation of 14 families. All schools in the state except those in Saitual district remained shut on Tuesday due to rain.
Assam
The overall flood situation remained critical with the death toll in the deluge and landslides at 11 while two others remained missing. More than 5.15 lakh people in 65 revenue circles and 1254 villages of 22 districts remained affected, with Sribhumi the worst-hit district with 1,94,172 affected. A total of 165 relief camps are sheltering 31,212 displaced people, while another 157 relief distribution centres are also functional. Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an ‘orange alert’ for the state.
Manipur floods
Over 56,000 people have been affected by flash floods triggered by overflowing rivers and embankment breaches in Manipur. 10,477 houses have been damaged and 56,516 people have been affected, an official statement said on Tuesday. 2913 people have been evacuated from the affected areas, it said. At least 57 relief camps have been opened for affected people mostly in Imphal East district. Ninety-three landslides have been reported in the last five days across the state.
PM assures help
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered all possible help from the central government to the northeastern states reeling under floods following heavy downpour, officials said on Tuesday. Modi spoke to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla and took stock of the situation. He assured them all possible help and support from the Centre.
