Significance of Republic Day and adoption of Constitution
Republic Day is observed every year on January 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1950, marking the country’s formal transition into a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic. The day holds profound historical significance, representing the culmination of India’s freedom struggle and the establishment of a constitutional framework based on justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
Grand celebrations planned at Kartavya Path
The main celebrations will be held at Kartavya Path in the national capital, where President Droupadi Murmu will preside over the ceremonial parade. The event will also be attended by distinguished international guests, including Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen, underscoring India’s growing global engagement and diplomatic ties.
Kartavya Path, stretching from Rashtrapati Bhavan to the National War Memorial, has been elaborately decorated to reflect India’s transformative journey since Independence. According to a release issued by the Ministry of Defence, this year’s celebrations will present a unique blend of the 150-year legacy of the national song Vande Mataram, India’s rapid developmental strides, its robust defence capabilities, and the nation’s rich cultural diversity.
Ceremonial programme and tribute at National War Memorial
The ceremonial programme will commence at 10:30 am and is expected to last around 90 minutes. It will begin with the Prime Minister’s visit to the National War Memorial, where he will lead the nation in paying homage to fallen soldiers by laying a wreath. He will then proceed, along with other dignitaries, to the saluting dais to witness the parade.
Tableaux to showcase culture, self-reliance and national progress
As per tradition, the arrival of the President and the chief guests in the ceremonial buggy will be escorted by the President’s Bodyguard. The unfurling of the National Flag will be followed by the National Anthem and a 21-gun salute fired using indigenously developed 105 mm Light Field Guns.
The parade will also feature 30 tableaux—17 from States and Union Territories and 13 from various ministries and departments—based on the themes ‘Swatantrata ka Mantra: Vande Mataram’ and ‘Samriddhi ka Mantra: Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, showcasing India’s cultural heritage, self-reliance and vision for inclusive national progress.
