Cops clueless where ammo found near Akurdi rly station came from

The Nigdi police recovered 110 bullets from a sewage chamber near Akurdi railway station yesterday. Of these, about 46 bullets are usable.

The Akurdi police chowky under the Nigdi police station got a call from a student, Babasaheb Kokitkar, who came across the bullets in a bag.

The Nigdi police are clueless about the origin and purpose of these bullets.

API P V Jadhav of the Nigdi police station, who rushed to the spot, said, "The bullets are of various sizes and not all are live. We have sent the bullets to the ammunition factory in Khadki to get information about the origin and other manufacturing details."

API Jadhav said it could have been the work of some scrap dealer. "We suspect that a scrap dealer may have bought them along with other material and must have then thrown it in the sewage chamber, fearing police action."

Jadhav added, "Four of the live bullets are of ranger type, but three of them are damaged. There were 15 more empty rounds of the same kind. The set also had 23 bullets of 7.62 mm SLR rifles.u00a0 Of these 17 are usable, whereas six are damaged. We could not categorise the rest, which are of different diametres and lengths."
