The Pimpri-Chinchwad Mumnicipal Corporation (PCMC) has joined hands with students and experts from the College of Engineering, Pune (COEP), to introduce a Rs 12.23-crore Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system that will help the civic body control all water reservoirs in municipal limits. Dr S D Agashe, dean, academics, COEP, got PMC engineers acquainted with SCADA, a recently developed technology. "The civic body is facing a problem of equal distribution of water supply to 35 lakh citizens. SCADA is a very transparent system that will help the PCMC do water audits," Agashe said.



Final authority
Speaking about the COEP involvement in the project, Pravin Ladkat, executive engineer, Water Supply, PCMC, said, "Agashe is the final authority that will approve all stages of SCADA implementation from design to actual enforcement," Ladkat said.

PCMC's SCADA initiative is to be funded by the central government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Wide scope
According to Ladkat, SCADA will be enforced at all levels of raw water pumping, water supply and distribution level. "The system will also monitor the water level of the river, water flow and also the water quality including the PH and turbidity level. It will ensure water is distributed equitably to its last destination. This system is based on satellite communication," he added.
