The first batch of flood relief materials worth Rs 1 core were flagged off the Gurdwara Kharghar in Navi Mumbai on Thursday to Punjab.
The departure ceremony began with an 'Ardas (prayer),' invoking divine blessings for the success of this vital humanitarian effort.
The initiative was carried out by the volunteers of Team Relief-Punjab Floods. A team will be on the ground in Dera Baba Nanak, one of the worst flood-affected areas in Punjab, on October 1 and 2, to begin distribution. In the first phase, 500 flood-affected families will receive specially curated household relief kits. Each kit includes a mattress with cover, a woollen bed sheet with two pillows, a blanket, clothes and basic utensils, items selected to meet urgent shelter and survival needs.
Coinciding with Dussehra on October 2, the team will spend the day with the affected families to symbolically mark a new beginning, offering not just aid, but also solidarity and emotional support.
So far, over Rs 1 crore in contributions has been mobilised for the ongoing Punjab flood relief mission. The second phase of distribution will kick off from Khadoor Sahib at 8 am on October 1, with Padma Shri Sant Baba Sewa Singh. Relief convoys will then proceed to other flood-affected districts across Punjab on October 2, ensuring wider outreach to families still in urgent need of assistance.
Team Relief will shift focus to long-term recovery support, including providing diesel, seeds, pesticides, and medicines to help revive agriculture, the primary livelihood of the region. Reconstruction support for completely damaged homes is also planned to help restore dignity and stability to displaced families.
"This mission is not just about providing relief, but restoring hope and dignity," said Bal Malkit Singh, Chairman of Team Relief – Punjab Floods and Convenor of the Maharashtra Sikh Association. “Together, we can ensure that Punjab rises again, stronger and more united,” he added.
An appeal has been made to individuals, organisations, and well-wishers across the country to come forward and support this ongoing sewa effort, ensuring no affected family is left behind.
