Highlighting the pressures faced by doctors in peripheral hospitals, including professional isolation, heavy workloads, limited administrative support, and inadequate oversight, BMC MARD said these factors can exacerbate mental distress
BMC MARD condemned Dr Sampada Mundhe’s death and urged immediate action
The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (BMC MARD) has expressed deep grief over the tragic death of doctor, a government medical officer at Sub-District Hospital in Phaltan.
Highlighting the pressures faced by doctors in peripheral hospitals, including professional isolation, heavy workloads, limited administrative support, and inadequate oversight, BMC MARD said these factors can exacerbate mental distress. The doctor reportedly faced harassment and humiliation, linked to a departmental inquiry, and named two police officials in her suicide note, alleging physical assault and mental harassment.
BMC MARD condemned the circumstances leading to the doctor’s death and demanded immediate action from the authorities. The association called for the suspension of the two police officials named in her suicide note, pending an impartial judicial probe.
They also urged a transparent, time-bound, and independent inquiry into all aspects of the case to ensure that justice is served.
BMC MARD emphasised the need for accountability from the health department and administrative officials who failed to act despite repeated complaints and warning signs.
Additionally, the association called for the establishment of a statewide grievance redressal and mental health support system for doctors facing professional stress, highlighting the urgent need to safeguard the well-being of healthcare workers.
“This tragedy reflects systemic challenges affecting the well-being of doctors serving the public,” BMC MARD said. The association expressed solidarity with Dr Mundhe’s family and colleagues, urging swift justice and reforms to prevent such incidents in the future.
