Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday spoke to the family of a woman doctor who allegedly died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Satara district, assuring them of support in their pursuit of justice, news agency PTI reported.
During the nearly seven-minute telephonic conversation, the doctor’s mother made an emotional plea to the Congress leader, urging him to ensure that justice is served for the “grave injustice” done to her daughter. The family also requested Gandhi to pressure the government to constitute a special investigation team (SIT) to probe her death, fearing that crucial evidence might be erased as it has been a week since the incident.
According to PTI, the doctor’s mother alleged that three to four other individuals had “pressured” her daughter, but they have neither been questioned nor traced.
She did not provide further details.
The conversation between Gandhi and the doctor’s parents and siblings took place when Maharashtra Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal was visited the family at Kavadgaon village in Beed district. The Congress Member of Parliament (MP) assured the doctor’s family that he would press the government to set up an SIT for a detailed investigation into her death.
Earlier, Gandhi had described the incident as an “institutionalised murder” and said it revealed the “inhuman and insensitive” nature of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government.
The 28-year-old doctor was found dead in a hotel room in Phaltan town of Satara district on the night of October 23. The post-mortem report indicated suicide. According to police, a note written on her palm alleged that Police Sub-inspector Gopal Badane had raped her multiple times, while a software engineer mentally harassed her.
Both the accused were arrested on October 25.
Police said there was no evidence of forced entry into the hotel room, ruling out the presence of anyone else during the incident.
The victim’s relatives have demanded an SIT probe, alleging that vital data was deleted from her mobile phone after her death. Her uncle claimed that her phone was accessed using her fingerprint posthumously, resulting in the loss of crucial information.
Meanwhile, residents of Wadwani in Beed observed a bandh on Tuesday, demanding an SIT investigation into the alleged suicide of the doctor, who hailed from the region.
