UNESCO's Director General Audrey Azoulay on Saturday said she shared with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India the pride and joy of the inscription of the 'Maratha Military Landscapes' on the World Heritage List.

'Maratha Military Landscapes', representing extraordinary fortification and military system envisioned by the Maratha rulers, was inscribed on the coveted list on Friday.

This is India's 44th property to receive the recognition.

"Dear Prime Minister @narendramodi, I share with you and the Indian people the pride and the joy of the inscription of the 'Maratha Military Landscapes of India' on @UNESCO World Heritage List. These twelve exceptional buildings, constructed by the Marathas between the 17th and 19th centuries, are now officially part of humanity's heritage!," Azoulay said in a post on X while sharing Modi's post made earlier in the day.

The 'Maratha Military Landscapes' was developed between the 17th and 19th centuries.

The 12 components of the inscribed property are - Salher Fort, Shivneri Fort, Lohgad, Khanderi Fort, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala Fort, Vijay Durg, Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu.

These components, distributed across diverse geographical and physiographic regions, showcase the strategic military powers of the Maratha rule, the Indian officials had earlier said.

Earlier in the day, Modi hailed the inscription of 'Maratha Military Landscapes' on the UNESCO World Heritage List and said every Indian is elated with this recognition.

"When we speak of the glorious Maratha Empire, we associate it with good governance, military strength, cultural pride and emphasis on social welfare. The great rulers inspire us with their refusal to bow to any injustice," he said in a post on X.

"Every Indian is elated with this recognition. These 'Maratha Military Landscapes' include 12 majestic forts, 11 of which are in Maharashtra and 1 is in Tamil Nadu," he added.

Modi called upon everyone to visit these forts and learn about the rich history of the Maratha Empire.

On the latest addition to the World Heritage List, the Culture Ministry said it reflected the country's enduring cultural legacy and showcased its diverse traditions of architectural brilliance, regional identity and historical continuity.

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the UNESCO, Vishal V Sharma, delivered the statement on New Delhi's behalf after the inscription was announced.

"This is a historic day, not only for India, but especially for Marathi people all over the world. The rich cultural heritage of the Marathas has been honoured by the recognition of its Outstanding Universal Value by the international community," he said.

A few other members of the delegation stood behind him, holding the tricolour.
