Soon you can experience 'African Safari' at Nagpur's Gorewada Zoological Park

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Forest Minister Ganesh Naik signed an MoU with NBCC to launch India’s first African Safari at Gorewada Zoo, Nagpur. Spread across 63 hectares, the Rs 285 crore project will feature 22 exotic African species and a grand entrance plaza. It aims to boost tourism and biodiversity education in the state.

Wildlife enthusiasts will soon be able to witness the grandeur of African wildlife without travelling to Africa and other countries. In the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, the much-anticipated ‘African Safari’ project at Nagpur’s Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park took a significant step. 

With the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FDCM Gorewada Zoo Limited and National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC-India). The MoU signed between both institutions signifies the enhancement of tourism within Maharashtra. 


Along with Maharashtra’s Chief Minister and Forest Minister, other delegates such as NBCC Chairman and Managing Director K.P.M. Swamy, Maharashtra Forest Development Corporation MD Naresh Jurmure, FDCM Gorewada Zoo Ltd. CEO Chandrashekharan Bala, and other senior officials including Milind Mhaiskar and Vikas Kharge were also present.



While addressing this memorable signing of the MoU, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, emphasised the African Safari at Gorewada Zoological Park. As per the release by the officials, an African safari and a plaza will also be developed at the entrance of the park.

The African Safari will be developed over 63 hectares within the park, featuring 22 exotic African species. The project has been estimated at Rs 285 crore, which will include the construction of a grand plaza at the park’s entrance and is expected to be completed within 18 months, as per the release issued.
 
Highlighting the project, the work of the Indian Safari in the zoo has already been completed, and it was inaugurated earlier on January 26, 2021. However, the African Safari will be built in the second phase. Moreover, the construction will be done by NBCC, a national-level organisation.

The African species which are set to be the main attraction for the tourist will be the spotted Tarsier, White-Horned Rhinoceros, Patas Monkey, Red River Hog, African Lion, Chimpanzee, Hamadryas Baboon and Cheetah. Whereas the animals that will be in the free-roaming areas would be Ostrich, Hippopotamus, Impala, Jamesbok, Common Eland, Blue Wildebeest, Giraffe, Burchell’s Zebra and Kudu.

The MoU between FDCM Gorewada Zoo Limited and NBCC will surely help Nagpur and Maharashtra to become a major hub for wildlife tourism, environmental education, and biodiversity conservation in India.
