Azadpur Mandi, Asia’s largest wholesale market for fruits and vegetables, has decided to stop importing apples from Turkiye, citing the current diplomatic situation.

Azadpur Fruit Mandi chairman Meetha Ram Kriplani said, “We have decided to discontinue all new imports of apples from Turkiye. While consignments ordered earlier will still arrive, no further trade in apples or other produce will take place going forward.”


Azadpur Mandi had long prioritised Turkish apples, with imports reaching 1.16 lakh tonnes in 2024.


Turkish apples are also off the shelves in Alwar’s fruit markets as traders in Rajasthan joined the chorus to boycott products. Earlier, marble traders in Ajmer had refused to import stones from Turkiye.

Jewellers 

The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) on Friday urged the industry to suspend all business transactions with Turkiye and Azerbaijan in order to show support for ‘Operation Sindoor’.

This comes after Turkiye’s public support for Pakistan in the wake of Operation Sindoor, the GJC said in a statement.

“The Indian gem and jewellery sector stands united in support of the nation. It is imperative that our industry sets a strong example by prioritising the country over commerce. We call upon every jeweller, manufacturer, trader, and wholesaler to stop all transactions with Turkiye and Azerbaijan,” GJC chairman Rajesh Rokde said.

Delhi airport 

After the Central government revoked the security clearance of Turkish ground-handling company Celebi, citing national security concerns, the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has officially terminated its association with Celebi entities.

“In compliance with the directive from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to revoke the security clearance of Celebi Airport Services India, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has formally ended its association with Celebi entities responsible for ground handling and cargo operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA),” according to the statement.

Universities suspend MoUs

Several Universities incluidng Punjab’s Lovely Professional University, Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University in Kanpur, Hyderabad’s Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi have terminated its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with varsities in Turkiye and Azerbaijan.
