Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday strongly criticised Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his allegations of "vote theft" by the Election Commission, claiming the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition has neither read the Constitution nor respects it, reported ANI.
Speaking to the media, Rijiju said, "Rahul Gandhi has not read the Constitution and has no respect for it. I don't have any medicines to improve Rahul Gandhi. He should come to his senses after the Supreme Court's comment."
The Union Minister was referring to the Supreme Court's remarks on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, which upheld the Election Commission’s revision of electoral rolls and noted that Aadhaar card is not conclusive proof of citizenship, reported ANI.
Noting there are many "smart people" in Congress, Rijiju urged them to "give some wisdom to Rahul Gandhi." He said, "There are some smart people in Congress too; not all of them are like Rahul Gandhi. They should come together and give some wisdom to him."
Commenting on a video shared by Gandhi, in which he met people declared "dead" by the Election Commission (EC), Rijiju called it a "drama" and reiterated that the poll body’s work involves removing the names of deceased voters and adding new ones.
"The Election Commission has 3-4 guidelines. In every state, there are Election Commissioner officers under the state government. They prepare electoral rolls on behalf of the EC. SC has clearly stated that the process of SIR has been going on since independence, and it should happen. It ensures that dead people’s names are removed from the rolls. So why does Rahul Gandhi do this tea-drinking drama? SIR is done to remove the names of dead people and add new voters," Rijiju said.
Gandhi on Wednesday shared a video of having tea with some "dead" voters from Bihar and thanked the EC for this "unique" experience.
A group of voters met the Congress MP and shared how they were declared "dead" by the poll body and had their names removed from the voter list after the SIR exercise.
Sharing the video, Gandhi wrote, "There have been many interesting experiences in life, but I never got the chance to have tea with 'dead people.' For this unique experience, thank you Election Commission!"
"I have heard that you guys are not alive. The Election Commission has killed you," the LoP further stated.
He also asked how they found out, to which one replied they discovered it through the EC's voters list.
The development comes amid a row over Rahul Gandhi's "vote theft" allegations against the EC and the alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision in poll-bound Bihar.
