Streets across Patna erupted in celebrations as Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor pulled off a major political upset in the high-stakes Bankipur Assembly by-election, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha

The Bankipur Assembly constituency, formerly known as Patna West, has been a BJP bastion since 1995

For over three decades, the seat remained the political stronghold of one family. It was first represented by BJP leader Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha and later held continuously for five consecutive terms by his son, Nitin Nabin

The by-election was necessitated after Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha while serving as the BJP's National President

Making his electoral debut, the 49-year-old defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by a margin of 19,324 votes, securing 64,151 votes.
