Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday described the drought-like situation in Latur and Dharashiv in the Marathwada region as “extremely serious”, saying the two districts had received only around 50 per cent of their normal rainfall this year. Pics/X (@CMOMaharashtra)

Fadnavis said the rainfall deficit had severely affected crops, particularly soybean, and warned that the situation could also lead to shortages of drinking water and fodder. Pics/X (@CMOMaharashtra)

Fadnavis visited Nilanga tehsil in Latur to assess water shortages and crop losses and interact with farmers. He later visited parts of Dharashiv and inspected soybean crops in the Barshi area of Solapur district

The chief minister said there would be no shortage of funds for drought relief and that the state government would issue a Government Resolution (GR) on the situation before Saturday to initiate relief measures

He said the government would seek assistance from the Centre under National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) norms, but farmers would not have to wait for central funds

The state would begin providing assistance from its own treasury, he said

The state government has ordered crop damage assessments, or panchnamas, but the chief minister said relief would be provided comprehensively
