Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP SP) leader Rohit Pawar on Monday launched a fresh agitation in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, accusing the Maharashtra government of failing to honour its commitment to discuss farmers' concerns over the newly announced farm loan waiver scheme. Pics/X

Addressing reporters before the protest began, the Karjat-Jamkhed MLA claimed the government had deployed a heavy police presence to discourage demonstrators and warned that a 'jail bharo' movement would be launched if the protest was suppressed

Rohit Pawar recalled that he had suspended his indefinite hunger strike in Pandharpur earlier this month after Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan assured him that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would convene a meeting with farmers before the state legislature's monsoon session

Rohit Pawar said the farmers had withdrawn their earlier agitation in good faith but accused the government of betraying that trust by failing to fulfil its assurance

The opposition leader claimed nearly 1,000 police personnel, including riot-control units and officers authorised to order a lathi charge, had been deployed at the protest venue

Rohit Pawar alleged that their removal had significantly reduced compensation for farmers, claiming that although crop losses last year amounted to approximately Rs 17,000 crore, only around Rs 1,200 crore was disbursed as insurance compensation
