A deadly stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on the night of February 15th, 2025, resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people, including 14 women, with more than a dozen others injured. The tragic incident occurred around 10:00 pm on platforms 13 and 14, as a large crowd of passengers, mostly Maha Kumbh devotees, gathered to board trains heading to Prayagraj for the ongoing religious gathering. The stampede was triggered by an unexpected surge in the number of passengers at the station. The sudden rush led to a chaotic situation, with some passengers fainting, further exacerbating the situation. Authorities quickly took control, managing to ease the crowd and restore order. The railway station had already experienced a swell in the number of passengers, particularly on platforms 14 and 15, as many were attempting to board special trains to Prayagraj. In response to the overwhelming crowd, the authorities arranged for four special trains and were in the process of arranging additional ones to accommodate the passengers. Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw immediately ordered a high-level investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the stampede and to prevent such occurrences in the future. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident, offering his condolences to the victims’ families and praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
