Health Concerns Grow Over Sonam Wangchuk's 18-Day Fast
Updated On: 22 July, 2026 01:36 AM IST
Concerns over Sonam Wangchuk's health have intensified after a Public Interest Litigation was moved before the Delhi High Court seeking urgent medical intervention as his indefinite hunger strike entered its 18th day. According to the petition, Wangchuk has reportedly lost around 8.5 kilograms during the course of his fast at Jantar Mantar, prompting fears that his condition could deteriorate further without immediate medical care. The plea urges the court to direct authorities to shift him to a government hospital and ensure continuous medical supervision. The petition also seeks permission for a medically supervised liquid diet containing essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals, arguing that preserving Wangchuk's life is of paramount importance. The PIL has also criticised the treatment of Wangchuk, alleging that he has been handled "like a hardcore criminal, terrorist or traitor," while calling for authorities to adopt a more humane approach during the ongoing protest.
