The English city of Liverpool has been stripped of UNESCO’s heritage tag after the United Nations’ cultural agency found new structures, including a football stadium, undermined the beauty of its Victorian docks.
Liverpool was named a World Heritage Site in 2004, joining iconic structures like the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The UN’s cultural agency UNESCO voted narrowly in China to take the call. It has said that the developments, including the planned new Everton FC stadium, had resulted in a “serious deterioration” of the historic site.
Liverpool mayor Joanne Anderson called the decision “incomprehensible” and said they hope to appeal. “Our World Heritage site has never been in better condition having benefitted from hundreds of millions of pounds of investment across dozens of listed buildings and the public realm,” BBC quoted Anderson as saying.
Liverpool becomes only the third site to lose its World Heritage status since the list began in 1978.
