The English city of Liverpool has been stripped of UNESCO&rsquo;s heritage tag after the United Nations&rsquo; cultural agency found new structures, including a football stadium, undermined the beauty of its Victorian docks.
Liverpool was named a World Heritage Site in 2004, joining iconic structures like the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.&nbsp;
The UN&rsquo;s cultural agency UNESCO voted narrowly in China to take the call. It has said that the developments, including the planned new Everton FC stadium, had resulted in a &ldquo;serious deterioration&rdquo; of the historic site.
Liverpool mayor Joanne Anderson called the decision &ldquo;incomprehensible&rdquo; and said they hope to appeal. &ldquo;Our World Heritage site has never been in better condition having benefitted from hundreds of millions of pounds of investment across dozens of listed buildings and the public realm,&rdquo; BBC quoted Anderson as saying.
Liverpool becomes only the third site to lose its World Heritage status since the list began in 1978.
