Hospitals in Gaza reported the killing of at least 18 people, eight of them food-seekers, in Israeli firing on Saturday, as Palestinians endured severe risks searching for food amid airdrops and restrictions on overland aid delivery. However, Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) said “nothing (happened) at or near our sites.”
The episode came a day after a US envoy visited a food distribution site in the Gaza Strip operated by an Israeli-backed American contractor on Friday. US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff posted on X that he had spent over five hours inside Gaza to gain “a clear understanding of the humanitarian situation and help craft a plan to deliver food and medical aid to the people.” More than 1000 people have been killed by Israeli fire since May while seeking aid in the territory, most near the GHF sites but also near United Nations aid convoys, the UN said last month.
The Israeli military has said it has only fired warning shots at people who approach its forces, and GHF has maintained that its armed contractors have only fired warning shots to prevent deadly crowding.
