The tremor measured 4 on Japan's seismic intensity scale of 7, indicating moderate shaking in parts of Aomori Prefecture. Authorities reported no immediate major damage following the quake.

The earthquake's epicentre was located at 41.3 degrees north latitude and 142.0 degrees east longitude, off the Pacific coast of Aomori in northern Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that no tsunami advisory or warning was issued after the earthquake, easing fears of coastal flooding.

The Aomori earthquake came just days after a powerful earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture, registering the maximum intensity of 7 on Japan's seismic scale and causing extensive destruction.

Officials in Kumamoto Prefecture said the death toll from the earlier earthquake has climbed to 35, with investigations continuing into several deaths to determine whether they were directly linked to the disaster.
