In Photos: Operation Sindoor heroes Air Marshal Bharti, Lt Gen Ghai among 105 honoured by President

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday conferred 105 Distinguished Service Decorations on personnel from the Indian Armed Forces and the Indian Coast Guard during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 (Phase-II) at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The awards recognised distinguished service of an exceptional order by members of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard. (Pics/PTI)


Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, who led military operations as Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) during Operation Sindoor, was awarded the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal. An officer from the Kumaon Regiment, Lt Gen Ghai served at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army) and played a key role in directing the operation.

Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti, AVSM, VM, Flying (Pilot), received the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal for his leadership during the Indian Air Force's operations in Operation Sindoor. During one of the operation's media briefings, he quoted the Ramcharitmanas: "Vinay na maanat jaladh jad gaye teen din beeti. Bole Ram sakop tab, bhay binu hoye na preeti".

Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, was conferred the Param Vishisht Seva Medal. He assumed charge as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy on May 31, 2026, and was recognised for his distinguished service.

Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and set to assume office as the next Chief of the Army Staff from June 30, was awarded the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal for distinguished military service.

Surgeon Rear Admiral (now Surgeon Vice Admiral) Vivek Hande, VSM, and Indian Coast Guard Additional Director General Donny Michael, PTM, TM, were honoured with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for their distinguished service in the armed forces and the Coast Guard.

Apart from Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai and Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti, recipients of the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal included Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh (Retired), Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari (Retired) and Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra. In total, the President presented seven Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medals, along with 30 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, 12 Uttam Yudh Seva Medals and 56 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals during the ceremony.
