Herzog began a state visit to Australia on Monday, seeking to console the Jewish community following a deadly antisemitic attack in Sydney and to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries
Herzog said protests targeting him were largely aimed at “undermining and delegitimising” Israel’s right to exist
Herzog said the visit was also an opportunity to deepen ties between Israel and Australia, describing both as democracies that share common values and face global threats together
Security was tightened during the visit, with police snipers positioned on rooftops around Bondi. Herzog is scheduled to visit Melbourne and Canberra before returning to Israel on Thursday
Protests against Herzog’s visit were planned later on Monday, amid criticism of Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza. Mainstream Jewish organisations, however, welcomed the visit, which was initiated by Jewish leaders and extended by Governor-General Sam Mostyn at the request of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
