Typhoon Surigae is the 26th named storm of the 2026 western Pacific season and a different cyclone from the 2021 system that used the same name. This year, it formed east of the Philippines around September 23 and then moved north and northeast towards Japan, staying east of Luzon

Over warm waters, Surigae intensified rapidly. By September 27–28, Japanese authorities had classified it as a very strong typhoon, while the Joint Typhoon Warning Center briefly classified it as a super typhoon

The storm passed near the Ryukyu Islands, with Okinawa and the Amami region experiencing strong winds and high waves, while the centre remained offshore

By Tuesday, September 29, Surigae was moving northeast over the Pacific, south of Japan, and was weakening. Tokyo's Shinjuku district saw commuters walking under umbrellas as rain fell across the capital

Kanto was still recovering from Typhoon Dujuan, which brought record rainfall, landslides and flooding to parts of Chiba and Kanagawa the previous week. Dujuan's death toll had risen to 14 by September 28. Surigae's approach therefore kept attention on the region even as the storm's direct impact on Tokyo remained limited.
