CENTCOM said the operation targeted Iranian military operations centres, maritime capabilities, aircraft hangars, drone storage facilities, and military logistics infrastructure. The US stated that the strikes were intended to further degrade Iran's operational capacity in the strategic Gulf region.

The US military claimed Iran has attacked more than 30 commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz over the past three months, describing the incidents as unwarranted and dangerous for civilian mariners. CENTCOM added that the waterway remains open despite the ongoing conflict.

CENTCOM said US forces have helped facilitate the safe transit of around 900 commercial vessels carrying approximately 450 million barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz since early May, highlighting the strategic importance of the maritime route.

Following the US announcement, Iran's state broadcaster IRIB reported airstrikes in several regions, including Ilam, Kurdistan, Hamadan, Khuzestan, East Azerbaijan, and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces. Iranian officials confirmed that multiple locations came under attack.

IRIB reported explosions in Chabahar in southeastern Iran, as well as in Tabriz and Mahshahr. Authorities in affected provinces said security assessments and field evaluations were underway following the reported strikes.

The latest strikes come after the collapse of a 14-point memorandum of understanding signed last month between the United States and Iran. The agreement had sought to reduce hostilities and revive negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme and security in the Strait of Hormuz, but its breakdown has led to renewed military exchanges across West Asia.
