Israel under fire, Ben-Gvir humiliates flotilla detainees sparking outrage
Updated On: 21 May, 2026 06:51 PM IST
Israeli naval forces intercepted a Gaza-bound flotilla carrying pro-Palestine activists and aid supplies. Around 430 activists from more than 40 countries were detained and taken to Ashdod port, where viral videos released by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir sparked global condemnation. The footage showed handcuffed activists kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs as Ben-Gvir waved an Israeli flag and declared, “We are the landlords.” One activist shouting “Free Palestine” was seen being pushed to the ground by security personnel. Countries including the US, UK, France, Canada, Australia, Spain, Belgium and Italy condemned the treatment of the activists, while rights groups accused Israeli authorities of humiliation and abuse. Even Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly distanced himself from Ben-Gvir’s actions, calling them “not in line with Israel’s values.”
