After sparking major backlash with a controversial law weakening Ukraine’s key anti-corruption watchdogs, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a stunning U-turn. On Thursday, Ukraine’s Parliament overwhelmingly passed a new bill — drafted by Zelenskyy himself — that restores the full independence of the two powerful oversight bodies. The move comes after heavy criticism from the European Union, human rights groups, and Ukrainian citizens, who feared that Zelenskyy’s earlier decision would open the door to political interference in corruption investigations.
