Before joining Hindi film industry, he attended and graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
Before joining Bollywood, Mithun was said to be part of the Naxalites. During his days as a Naxalite, he became friends with Ravi Ranjan, a popular Naxal figure, known to his friends as Bhaa. Bhaa was known for his manipulation skills and oratory abilities.
The actor has taken training in Martial Arts to the grade of black belt.

The actor runs hotels in Ooty in Tamil Nadu, Darjeeling, Siliguri, and Kolkata.
Mithun has appeared in around 350 films till date. Apart from Hindi, he has done movies in Bengali, Oriya and Bhojpuri.
The star has over 38 dogs in his Mumbai bungalow and twice the amount at his Ooty home. He has also joined the Kennel Club of India and wants to help them in their endeavours.
