Haldwani violence: “Not religious structure…” says Nainital DM Vandana Singh

Haldwani violence: A violence broke out in Banbhoolpura area of Uttarakhand’s Haldwani on February 08. As violence rocked Haldwani, DM Vandana Singh held detailed press conference on Feb 09. Nainital DM Vandana Singh clarified that demolished property is “not a religious structure”. She said, “This was not an isolated activity to target a particular property only. This drive has been going on for a long time in different areas of Haldwani. It is an empty property that has two structures. Which are not registered as religious structure or has been given any such recognition. Some people call it a Madrasa, but on papers, there is no such existence. We vacated it and notice was pasted. The area is called ‘Malik ka Bagicha’, but in papers, it is not registered like that. It has been registered as the property of the Municipal Council.” Notably, 4 persons were killed and over 100 police personnel sustained injuries in the violence. Internet services in the area have been suspended and Section 144 has been imposed in Haldwani. Haldwani Violence: 4 dead, over 100 cops injured, security forces on spot

Security has been stepped up in Banbhoolpura area of Uttarakhand’s Haldwani after violence broke out. An anti-encroachment drive was carried out on February 08 after which violence broke out in the area. So far, 4 persons killed, and over 100 policemen sustained injuries in the Haldwani violence. Four companies of paramilitary forces were rushed to the city to maintain the law and order situation. District Magistrate has imposed a curfew in Banbhoolpura and issued shoot-at-sight orders. Many vehicles including cars, motorcycles were set ablaze during the violence on February 08. Internet Services have been suspended and educational institutions have been closed in the district. Uttarakhand Police has also requested the Home Ministry to send additional paramilitary forces. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami urged locals to maintain the law and order in district.

Hamas Attack: Israel-Palestine conflict claims atleast 1,100 lives

At least 1,100 people lost their lives as the conflict between Israel and Hamas militant group escalated. As per Reuters, at least 700 Israelis and 400 Palestinians were killed so far in the ongoing war. The Israel Air Force has launched lethal air strike in Gaza Strip with fighter jets attacking areas used by Hamas terrorists. The retaliation came after the Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel that claimed hundreds of lives and left thousands injured. Earlier, Hamas fired a barrage of rockets into the southern and central parts of the Israel. Several Israelis were taken as hostages in Gaza, the Times of Israel reported citing officials. There is fighting and heroic battles to save hostages, going on hours since October 7. Fighting between Israeli security forces and Haman gunmen continued in several places 24 hours after their incursion. Also, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed vengeance and said that Israel will turn Hamas into “rubble”.

14 dead, 100 missing in Sikkim flash floods; one army jawan rescued

At least 14 people were killed and over 100 are still missing in the Sikkim flash floods, according to officials. As per government sources, people are reportedly missing from Chungthang in Mangan district; Dikchu, Singtam in Gangtok district and Rangpo in Pakyong district. Over 20,000 people have been affected by the natural disaster. More than 3,000 tourists are feared to be stranded in different parts of the state. About 12-14 workers working in the Teesta Stage 3 dam in Chungthang are still stranded in the tunnels of the dam. Meanwhile, the Indian Army started helplines for families of missing people in Sikkim, including soldiers. One of the 23 missing Army personnel was rescued Wednesday, while the rest are still reportedly missing. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose assessed the situation in flood-affected regions of Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong after flash floods hit Sikkim.

Chandrayaan 3: Pragyan Rover traverses over 100 meters on Moon's south pole

Days after the successful soft landing of Chandaryaan 3, Pragyan rover has traversed over 100 meters. Taking to X, ISRO shared the information and said the rover traversed over 100 meters and continuing. Earlier on August 31, rover was seen rotating in search of a safe route on the surface of the moon. ISRO shared the first observation from the ChaSTE payload onboard Vikram Lander. ChaSTE measured the temp profile of lunar topsoil around the pole, to understand the thermal behaviour of moon’s surface. Notably, ISRO also launched its maiden solar mission ‘Aditya-L1’ from Sriharikota on September 02. ‘Aditya-L1’ is India’s first space-based Indian observatory mission to study the Sun. Spacecraft is carrying 7 payloads to observe the photosphere, chromosphere, and outermost layers of Sun. The total travel time from the launch pad to L1 will take about four months for ‘Aditya-L1’.

Indian athlete Dutee Chand receives 4 year ban from NADA, says 'sad and shocked'

Ace Indian athlete Dutee Chand, the current national 100 m record holder, has received a four-year ban from the National Anti-Doping Agency for failing an out-of-competition doping test for Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs) in December last year. Reacting to it, Indian sprinter Dutee Chand on August 19 appealed the state government, Central Government and NADA to spare her this time. She further added that she has given several doping tests earlier where she was never detected positive.

A high-mast national flag at Tango Top in Anantnag has been inaugurated by the J&K Police along with the district administration to honour the nationalistic sentiments of the people of Anantnag ahead of the Independence Day 2023. The high-mast national flag, which is visible up to 10 kms in all directions, would become a landmark of South Kashmir. Brig Amandeep Malhi, VSM, Cdr 1 Sect RR along with DIGP South Kashmir Range Rayees Mohammad Bhat, IPS, hoisted the flag. The work for the installation of the flag started with effect from June 2023. Given the history of South Kashmir, this Tricolour would be a symbol of unity and peace and would be referred to as “The Tricolour of Unity”.

Maharashtra Rains: Landslide in Raigad claims 4 lives, 100 trapped

Four persons have died due to a major landslide in Irshalwadi village of Khalapur tehsil of Maharashtra’s Raigad. At least three persons sustained injuries in the incident. Rescue operation is underway, so far, 30 people have been rescued. Soon after the incident, the Raigad Police set up a control room to monitor the situation. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde arrived at the site of the landslide in Irshalwadi village and took stock of the situation. NDRF teams have rushed to the site amid reports of at least 100 persons feared to be trapped. The landslide occurred around 11 pm on Wednesday at Irshalwadi village in Khalapur tehsil. Home Minister Amit Shah Condoled the lost lives in the incident.
