The protesters, led by Jarange, intend to begin a hunger strike at Azad Maidan, seeking Kunbi (OBC) status for the Maratha community. Despite Mumbai Police denying permission for a hunger strike in city, Maratha quota leader Manoj Jarange, accompanied by thousands, had reached Navi Mumbai earlier in the day. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said everyone has the right to protest but it should be done peacefully, amid opposition allegations that the government is taking the Marathas for a ride.

Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed the SC’s verdict and said, “It proves, Govt’s decision was constitutional”. Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019 in both houses. Notably, Supreme Court asked the Election Commission to hold J&K Assembly elections by Sept 2024. On August 5, 2019, the Central Government announced the revocation of the special status of J&K granted under Article 370.

In a landmark move, the Supreme Court Constitution Bench unanimously upheld the abrogation of Article 370 of J&K on Dec 11. A 5-Judge bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud pronounced the verdict and called Article 370 “Temporary Provision”. The Apex Court has directed ECI to conduct elections to the Legislative Assembly of J&K by Sept 2024. President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Dr Adish C Aggarwala hailed the Apex Court’s decision. While some political leaders welcomed the Article 370 verdict, others expressed their disappointment. PM Modi in a tweet, welcomed the verdict terming it historic, a beacon of hope and a promise of a brighter future.
