Port Blair: PM Modi inaugurates new terminal at Veer Savarkar airport

PM Modi virtually inaugurated the new integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair. Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, General VK Singh were also present at the inaugural ceremony. With a total built-up area of around 40,800 sqm., the new terminal building will be capable of handling about 50 lakh passengers annually. With apron suitable for two Boeing types of planes, the airport is now suitable for parking of ten aircraft at a time. Terminal has a number of sustainability features like Double Insulated Roofing System to reduce heat gain, skylights for inlet of natural sunlight. It has rainwater catchment in an underground water tank, on-site sewage treatment plant with 100% of treated wastewater reused for landscaping. Cutting-edge modern features of the terminal building will ensure minimal negative impact on the islands’ environment. As a gateway to the pristine islands of Andaman and Nicobar, Port Blair is a popular destination for tourists. The spacious New Integrated Terminal Building will boost air traffic and help enhance tourism in the region.  It will also help create enhanced employment opportunities for the local community and give fillip to the economy of the region.

PM Modi to inaugurate new terminal of Veer Savarkar airport in Port Blair

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the New Integrated Terminal Building of Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair on 18th July via video conferencing. With a total built-up area of around 40,800 sqm., the new terminal building will be capable of handling about 50 lakh passengers annually. An Apron suitable for two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 types of aircraft has also been constructed at Port Blair Airport at a cost of Rs 80 crore, making the airport now suitable for parking of ten aircraft at a time. Inspired from nature, the architectural design of the airport terminal resembles a shell shaped structure depicting sea and islands. The new airport terminal building has a number of sustainability features like Double Insulated Roofing System to reduce heat gain, skylights to provide maximum inlet of abundant natural sunlight during day time to reduce artificial light usage inside the building, LED lighting, low heat gain glazing. Rainwater catchment in an underground water tank, on-site sewage treatment plant with 100% of treated wastewater reused for landscaping and a 500 KW capacity solar power plant are some other features of the terminal building ensuring minimal negative impact on the islands’ environment.

Addressing the defence personnel deployed in Andaman and Nicobar Island, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on January 05 said that Indian soldiers showed bravery and valour in the Galwan valley during the India-China clash in December 2022. “Our soldiers showed bravery and valour in Galwan. Anything can be spoken outside but I know what happened at every step. I received reports and spoke with soldiers on how they took part in the India-China standoff, said Rajnath Singh in Port Blair.He also interacted with Indian jawans and officers serving in Andaman and Nicobar Island and commended the Command for strengthening national security and keeping the maritime domain safe and secure while playing a significant role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
