Seven individuals tragically perished as a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan on April 3. Reports from Taiwan's state media, cited by Reuters, highlight this as the most intense earthquake witnessed in the past 25 years. Sana Hashmi, a Fellow at the Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation, shared her firsthand experience of the quake's devastation in an exclusive interview with ANI. She provided insights into the current situation in Taiwan post-earthquake and elaborated on the responses from both Indian authorities in Taiwan and the Indian community. The Government of Taiwan has confirmed four fatalities and reported 711 injuries as a result of the disaster.

Taiwan Earthquake: Earthquake of 7.2 magnitude hits Taiwan

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 jolted Taiwan’s eastern coasts on April 03. The 7.2 magnitude earthquake knocked out power services in parts of Taiwan. It also sparked tsunami warnings for the southern part of Japan and the Philippines. Due to the quake, metro systems in Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung were suspended. Several buildings collapsed near the eastern county of Hualien, near the epicenter. As per Taiwan’s weather forecast agency, quake hit at a depth of 15.5 km off the eastern coast of Taiwan. Quoting Taiwan’s state media, Reuters reported that it was the strongest quake to hit the island in 25 years. Meanwhile, Japan issued an evacuation advisory for the coastal areas of the southern prefecture of Okinawa. Tsunami waves of up to 3 meters were expected to reach large areas of Japan's southwestern coast.

ISRO brings back Chandrayaan-3 propulsion module to Earth's orbit

ISRO successfully brought back Chandrayaan-3 Propulsion Module to the Earth orbit. It was brought back to the Earth’s orbit after exceeding its lunar mission objectives. It also demonstrated India's ability to not only launch objects to the Moon but also bring them back. This accomplishment shows that ISRO can restart engines on the moon and operate equipment. The primary objective of Chandrayaan-3 was to demonstrate a soft landing near lunar south-polar region. The spacecraft was launched on July 14, 2023, on board the LVM3-M4 vehicle from SDSC, SHAR. Chandrayaan-3 Vikram Lander made its historic touchdown on the Moon on August 23. The scientific instruments in the lander and rover were operated continuously for 1 lunar day. According to ISRO, the mission objectives of Chandrayaan-3 have been completely met. The initial plan was to operate this payload for about three months during the mission life of PM. Currently, Propulsion Module orbiting Earth, crossed its first perigee on Nov 22 with an altitude of 1.54 lakhs km. According to ISRO, the orbit period is nearly 13 days with a 27-degree inclination.

Nepal earthquake: India sends relief material and medical aid to Nepal

As Nepal grapples with the aftermath of the Nepal earthquake, India stepped up to help its neighbour by providing aid. In the hour of need, affirming India’s ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’, an IAF C-17 Globemaster carrying relief materials headed to Nepal on Nov 05. The flight carried essential relief materials and medical aid for the victims of the earthquake. The medical supplies including life-saving drugs, and surgical items to help Nepal recover from the devastation. India has been one of the first countries to provide humanitarian aid to the people of quake-hit Nepal. On November 4, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives after a massive earthquake of 6.4 magnitude jolted Nepal in the late hours of November 03. In the deadly quake, at least 157 people lost their lives and hundreds of others got injured. The injured, including women and children, were receiving treatment in hospitals in several parts of Nepal.

Nepal Earthquake: India releases helpline numbers, Nepal PM Dahal visits site

Nepal earthquake has ravaged Nepal with immense loss of lives and property sending shockwaves around the world. In the wake of the catastrophe, Nepalese PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal arrived at the affected areas and took stock of the situation. After assessing the situation, PM Dahal immediately called for a cabinet meeting of the Disaster Management Committee tomorrow. Nepal was jolted by a massive 6.6-magnitude earthquake on the late night of November 03 and continued to feel aftershocks, with a magnitude of 3.3. Meanwhile, Indian PM Narendra Modi had expressed his condolences as he said that he is ‘deeply saddened’ by the loss of lives. India also released an emergency contact number for Indians who require urgent assistance. Efforts are underway to provide medical assistance to those injured in the earthquake. The earthquake's impact has not been confined to Nepal alone, tremors were felt in several districts of North India, including Delhi-NCR, UP, and Bihar.

Earthquake of 6.4 magnitude claims 128 lives in Nepal, PM Modi “deeply saddened”

A massive earthquake of 6.4 magnitude jolted Nepal in the late hours of November 03. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the epicenter of the quake was in Nepal at a depth of 10 km. As many as 128 people lost their lives and at least 141 people were injured in the deadly incident, reported The Kathmandu Post. The tremors of the earthquake were also felt in several states of north India including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal expressed his grief over the incident. Jajarkot and West Rukum have suffered the most, with 92 deaths in Jajarkot alone, reported The Kathmandu Post. PM Modi expressed his grief over the loss of lives and damage caused by the earthquake in Nepal. Indian PM offered support to Nepal and expressed India’s willingness to extend all possible assistance.
