Flamingos
Flamingos visited the wetlands at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. Mumbaikars can also see them in abundance at Airoli, Mahul, and Sewri. They visit mostly for feeding purposes from breeding sites in the Gujarat region as well as Iran. Their migration starts post monsoon when water-filled regions start drying up. Since 1994, Thane creek has been attracting flamingos in large numbers. The boat rides at Thane creek have begun from 1st January for wildlife lovers and birdwatchers, who reached the spot in large numbers. Approximately 1 lakh flamingos have migrated this year, according to a forest officer.
