A storm hit the United Arab Emirates and Oman this week bringing record rainfall that flooded highways, inundated houses, grid-locked traffic and trapped people in their homes. At least 20 people were reported to have died in the deluge in Oman while another person was said to have died in floods in the UAE that closed government offices and schools for days. The storm had initially hit Oman on April 14 before it pounded the UAE on April 16, knocking out power and causing huge disruptions to flights as runways were turned into rivers. In the UAE, a record 254 millimetres (10 inches) of rainfall was recorded in Al Ain, a city bordering Oman. It was the largest ever in 24 hours since records started in 1949.

The IMD has issued a 'Red' alert for Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tiruvaneli and Kanyakumari districts. 40 lakes in the Kovilpatti area of Thoothukudi district have reached full capacity. According to IMD, heavy rain was expected to occur in one or two places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi. It has been raining continuously since the morning of December 17 in Kovilpatti and areas of Thoothukudi. On December 19, thunderstorms and lightning are likely to occur at one or two places in Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu government has taken precautionary measures to ensure people's safety following the Tamil Nadu rains.
19 December,2023 12:00 PM ISTThe rescue operations in rain-battered Shimla entered day six on August 19. Joint rescue operations are underway by NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army and local people. So far, 16 bodies, among 20 people have been recovered from the Summer Hill area of Shimla. Over 70 people have lost their lives in the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh due to the deadly monsoon. Moreover, the state has suffered a loss of more than 7,500 crores, as per the govt reports.

Teams of the State Disaster Response Force have been involved in rescue operations. The Indian Air Force also joined the operations evacuating people to safer places in the state’s Kangra district. Meanwhile, several areas of Noida witnessed severe waterlogging. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded in Noida’s Echotech area due to a rise in the water level of the Hindon River on July 25. The vehicles were seen almost submerged in the water making it ‘Water Parking’. Several houses were also submerged in the low-lying areas on July 23. Light to moderate rains were witnessed in parts of the NCR, including Noida, in the early hours of July 25. Amidst heavy rainfall in parts of the country, the IMD has issued alerts for Maharashtra, Haryana, Chandigarh, UP, Rajasthan, HP, and Uttarakhand.
