Justin Trudeau apologises after Nazi honoured in Canadian Parliament

The Speaker of Canada's House of Commons lower chamber resigned after he publicly praised a former Nazi soldier in Parliament. Ex-soldier Yaroslav Hunka had served in one of Adolf Hitler's Waffen SS units during World War II. Earlier, Justin Trudeau refused to take the blame for honouring Ex Nazi soldier Yaroslav Hunka in Parliament. Now, Canadian PM Trudeau on Sept 27 apologised days after Speaker of Canada's House of Commons lower chamber resigned. Speaker Anthony Rota publicly acknowledged the veteran in the House on September 22 and called him a hero. Anthony Rota told legislators he had made a mistake by inviting ex-soldier Yaroslav Hunka, 98, to attend a session. He praised a Nazi veteran during a session where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was also present. Meanwhile, The Kremlin on Sept 25 called it "outrageous" that the speaker of Canada's House of Commons had praised Nazi soldier.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 25 (IST) met President of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou in Athens. PM Modi was conferred with ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Honour’ by the Greek President. Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou also congratulated PM Modi for the success of Chandrayaan-3. PM Modi is on a day-long visit to Greece. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held delegation-level talks with Greek Counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens on August 25.

Defense Ministry approves proposal to buy 26 Rafales, submarines from France

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in France to attend Bastille Day parade as Guest of Honor. Defense Ministry approved proposal to buy 26 Rafale fighter aircraft, 3 Scorpene submarines for the Indian Navy from France. The proposal was approved by Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, three services chiefs and seniors also attended the meeting. As per proposals, Indian Navy is likely to get 22 single-seated Rafale Marine aircraft along with four trainer aircraft. The three Scorpene class submarines would be acquired under the repeated clause by Navy as part of Project 75. Notably, deals are estimated to be worth over Rs 90,000 crore but the final cost would be clear only after contract negotiations. The deals, which have been accorded Acceptance of Necessity by DAC, are likely to be announced during PM Modi’s visit to France. The Indian Navy has been pressing for acquiring these fighter aircraft and submarines urgently. The aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya, Vikrant have been operating the MiG-29s and need the Rafales for operations on both carriers. India is likely to seek price concessions in deal and would be insisting on having more 'Make-in-India' content in the plan.

President Murmu visited Presidential Palace in Paramaribo, Suriname on June 05. She received a warm welcome from the Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi. India and Suriname exchanged four MoUs in various fields including health and agriculture. Special covers of stamps to mark 150 years of arrival of Indians in Suriname were presented to President Murmu. PM Modi conferred with highest civilian awards in Fiji, Papua New Guinea

In a rare honour for a non-Fijian, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the country’s highest civilian award, the Companion of the Order of Fiji, in recognition of his global leadership on Monday.  Fiji’s Prime Minster Sitiveni Rabuka presented PM Modi with a medallion for the title when the two leaders met in Papua New Guinea.  Papua New Guinea also conferred PM Modi with their highest civilian award on May 22. He was given the accolade for championing the cause of unity of Pacific Island countries and spearheading the cause of Global South. Earlier in the day, the Indian Prime Minister held talks with his Papua New Guinea counterpart, James Marape, and took stock of their bilateral relations. The two leaders also discussed ways to further augment cooperation in areas like commerce, technology, healthcare and climate change.
